Local 7 Political News...
John Flerlage for Congressional District 6 (Arapahoe, Jefferson, Park, Elbert, Douglas Counties)
(Littleton, CO. April 19, 2010) Community support for John Flerlage, Democratic candidate for Congress in Colorado's CD 6, grows with recent endorsement by the hardworking family men and women of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 (UFCW7), whose origins date back to 1869.
Of the endorsement, Flerlage says, "The concerns of UFCW members are the same as those of all working Americans--the success of their employer, fair wages and benefits, and safe working environments. As an airline pilot and member of the ALPA (Air Line Pilots Association), I know that we can accomplish these goals while remaining partners and working closely with management."
Debbie Olander, Political Liaison for UFCW7 in Colorado and Wyoming, said of Flerlage, "Our political committee was very impressed with John. His service in the Marines and skill and experience as a pilot certainly set him apart from so many of the candidates I have met over the past 30 years. We have a lot of respect for him and what he has done, including his support for the effort to organize flight attendants."
Olander added, "The UFCW is fighting to get people elected who will do this state good. John Flerlage is one of us, a man for the people, and he really listens. What a contract between him and Mike Coffman."
UFCW Local 7 represents 23,000 members in grocery, food processing, and barbers at military bases in Colorado and Wyoming. Local 7 also represents Kaiser health care professionals in Colorado. The UFCW International Union represents 1,300,000 members.
John Flerlage served 22 years in the Marine Corps before retiring from the Marine Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. As a reservist, he answered the call for duty, flying volunteer air support missions in Bosnia as an F/A-18 Hornet pilot. He also served in various Squadron and Group level leadership and staff positions. While assigned to the Marine aviation advanced tactics school at Marine Corps Air Station-Yuma, Flerlage instructed young Marines in classes on world affairs, strategic commitments, and the operation of fighters and other tactical aircraft.
John is now a commercial airline pilot, flying international routes for the world's largest airline. He lives with his wife Helena and children in Littleton, CO and continues to be active in his community.
